OK........ Let's Debate Sculpt vs. Articulation

There just needs to be a happy medium.

I'm fine with 10 USEFUL POA:

-Knees
-Upper legs
-Waist
-Elbows
-Upper arms
-Neck

...Maybe it can even be a little less than that. I'm happy with decent articulation and "vanilla" poses. I don't need (or want) every McFarlane figure to have Marvel Legends-style articulation, because it doesn't fit with McFarlane's aesthetic... 10th Anniversary Spawn had some articulation that was ugly as sin (pecs?! mid-thigh?! abs?!).

A lot of pro-articulation fans mention S22 (Viking Age) as "THE" line where McFarlane showed it can balance articulation and sculpt, and I agree, though I know that fur hid a variety of sins.

I'm hoping articulation will return in coming lines, but I'm also realistic and don't think it's gonna happen, and that's fine... I'll spend my money elsewhere.

...the sculpt is what made McFarlane Toys what it is today. As well as changing the entire toy industry, itself.

...not that we don't try to add as much articulation as we can, but it often works against the form.

...when we can add articulation, we do and as much as possible.

...when we can hide it, we do it. When we can't hide it, we don't do it.

...I fail to see why some don't understand this. You just can't have both!

I like them both..soe figs are great without articulation and some is good with it, as long as they make the fig look cool I dont care mcuh.

I already went with sculpt over articulation but one thing I have about sculpt is that if the figure has little to no articulation-
I like a simple poae over a dramatic one.

Seriously, it's not really much of an issue with me. If I like the figure...I'll buy it. Nuff said.

I don't need a gazillion ponts of articulation on every fig.
BUT...
a few basic ones are pretty much a necessity for me. I passed on pretty well all of the last few Spawn lines because of that. and the few I did buy, I've been getting rid of.

and IMO, the "if it harms the sculpt" argument is not very valid, either. are you gonna tell me you can't desig a fig to have the hidden articulation? come on...McF has already proven they CAN do that.

also, for me, the style of fig determines if it needs to be articulated. the music figs, I don't care so much(except for the arms), but a fig that could be used in a fight scene...gotta have it.

and then there are some that, due to the lack, just hold zero interest for me. like the new Spawn fig where he's crouching. I understand it's based off of an image from a comic, yes. but that just doesn't do anything for me.
actually, that's more of just a boring fig thing than an articulation thing.

as McF continues on the statue line for the fighting characters, I'll be spending less cash on them.
and that's really too bad.

I imagine the Soldiers line will pretty much be statues. now, let's say you wanna make a diorama with them. well, McF has pretty much decided how you can do so...kinda takes some of the fun out of it, IMO.

here's one I think of when I think of decent articulation.
doesn't harm the sculpt, IMO, either...




now, for those who are happy with the statue-esque stuff, power to ya.
I'm glad you're getting stuff you like.
myself, certain figs MUST have articlation for me to buy them.

in the case of the Dragons, I had planned to set up little battle scenes, using some 3 3/4" figs to fight the dragons. well, if I want to do that now, I have very little option on how I can do that. also a shame, since they do look great.

anyways, I know I'm fighting a losing battle here, as far as McF goes. that's okay too, as there are other companies that continue to make toys, not statues. [img]wink.gif[/img]
